Water Festival in Myanmar

April is the hottest month in Myanmar. We think of cool water all the time. We love water very much.

In Myanmar the new year begins on April 17. We have a water festival just before the new year. The name of the festival is Thingyan. Thingyan means “change”.

When we hear the happy tap-tap-tap of the drums, we run out into the street. We all follow the drum sounds to the temples.

The most exciting thing happens on the way. People throw water at each other, even at stranger.

We get wet all over but feel very happy, because water means many good things to us. When we throw water, we shout, “Get wet in this cool water. I hope your New Year will be as good as this water!” So if you go out during Thingyan, you will never come home dry! And don’t wear your best clothes.

On the first morning after Thingyan, we all look different. The streets were very noisy the day before, but now they are quiet again. At the temples we pray that everybody well be healthy and happy in the new year.
